Sandra Bullock, The Blind Side
Helen Mirren, The Last Station
Carey Mulligan, An Education
Gabourey Sidibe, Precious
Meryl Streep, Julie & Julia
It seems like it is a two-horse race in this one between veteran leading ladies, Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock, and I'm guessing that's partially because a lot of people have seen their respective films. That's too bad, because I think the women in the smaller films were amazing. My favorite was Carey Mulligan as the innocent teenager who is forced to grow up quickly in An Education, while Gabourey Sidibe was outstanding in her very first acting role, Precious.
Best Supporting Actress Noms:
Penélope Cruz, Nine
Vera Farmiga, Up in the Air
Maggie Gyllenhaal, Crazy Heart
Anna Kendrick, Up in the Air
Mo'Nique, Precious
Mo'Nique seems to have this one clinched, and she was indeed perfect as the detestable, evil mother in Precious. Still, it was nice to see Maggie G. get nominated for her role as a journalist in Crazy Heart, which as I said before, is right in her wheelhouse. And I loved Up in the Air, but I'm afraid that its dual nominees might cancel each other out. This is definitely Mo'Nique's statue to lose...
Thoughts?
It's the battle of the bio-pics!
ReplyDeleteI adored Carrie Mulligan in An Education, but Meryl and Sandra seem to have the flashier roles, just like Mo'nique has in Precious.
I'm still pulling for Streep over Bullock! Go Meryl go!
